Athens - April 28 - May 3

The ferry stops at Ios, Naxos and Paros on the way to Athens. We catch the netro to te hotel we booked on the web. Its pretty run down, and they didnt keep a room for Louise so had to book her into another hotel. We immediatly go looking for other hotels as the ones we're in are not in very good condition. We find a otel with connected bedrooms which we take for the time we are in Athens. The next morning we check into the new hotel and catch the metro into the city centre. We do the Lonely Planet walking tour of Athens, stopping in a taverna for lunch. That night we go to a taverna with live Greek music.

The next day is May 1, Mayday, which is the international workers day, and Athens, having had a history of extreme government, closes down for the day. I go out to see if any of the museums are open, but they are not. We walk through the city, see markets and bands playing in plazas. We walk back to the hotel and find a restaurant that has been on the same premises for 180 years where we have dinner. The next day we visit the archeological museum which shows 9000 years of history on the site where Athens is. We visit the Acropolis and Parthenon. Looks like a movie set, difficult to believe, coming from Australia, that a city can really have this kind of site. We have lunch in a taverna in the meat market, buy groceries and make dinner.

On the 3rd we are flying to Cyprus to track down Louises family istory. We spend the morning walking through the city and on the web. At 3 we head back to the hotel, get our bags and catch the metro to the airport. Although we will be back in a week, it will only be to transfer to our other flights - Louise back to Australia, Beck and I onto Spain.
